With this gut-wrenching PSA, Sandy Hook Promise is generating awareness about school safety as well as their evidence-based protection programs, which have averted school shooting plots, suicides, and other acts of violence in schools. For many—if not all—of us, this video is incredibly hard to watch. However, it opens up an important discussion about the realities faced by today’s students.

Sandy Hook Promise was launched in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook tragedy by several family members whose loved ones were killed during the elementary school shooting, which occurred seven years ago this week. Based in Newton, CT, where Sandy Hook Elementary School is located, this non-profit organization strives to honor victims of gun violence, turning their hometown tragedy into a movement to protect children and prevent further tragedies.

The organization provides programs and practices that protect children from gun violence, uniting people from all backgrounds to take meaningful action in their communities. Sandy Hook Promise aims to create a culture that’s engaged in preventing harmful acts in schools, focusing on addressing the “human side” of gun violence.

Along with their PSA, the organization offers some simple actions for parents, caregivers, educators, and students to help prevent school shootings, as well as a checklist to help spot warning signs.
